Repairing a stuck Reset Button on the Ti-84 Plus CE

If you attempt to reset your Ti-84 Plus CE using a #2 pencil, there is a chance you're reading this article in hopes of trying to fix your calculator that will no longer turn on. The good news is that its a pretty simple fix, as long as you have all of the necessary tools.

Before beginning, make sure you have the following:

  • A Torx T6 Screwdriver
  • A small Philips Screwdriver
  • A pry tool (a credit card works fantastically!)
  • A clean workspace
  • 10 Minutes of time

Step 1

Using a Philips Head Screwdriver, Unscrew and remove the battery compartment cover.

Step 2

Put the battery compartment cover to the side. You'll now see a black rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Carefully remove this battery, and take special caution to not damage, poke, pierce, or damage it in any way. Place the battery on the table or in a spot where it cannot be accidentally damaged, knocked over, or have anything spilled on it.

Step 3

Once the battery is removed, use the philips head screwdriver to begin unscrewing the two screws that were hidden under the rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Step 4

Next, use the torx T6 Screwdriver to unscrew all 6 remaining screws around the perimeter of the calculator.

Step 5

Using a pry toll (this can be a credit card, or other similar thin piece of plastic), carefully pry apart the calculator.

Step 6

Open the calculator and lay it flat on the table.

Step 7

Identify the reset button cavity. Remove the Reset Button Pad on top of the reset button cavity. Flip the rear housing of the calculator over so that the 'contents' of the reset button cavity fall into your hand.

Step 8

Remove any and all foreign contaminants from this cavity, and reinsert the plastic reset button (in the photo shown, it is the blue piece) back into the rear calculator reset button housing.

Step 9

Reattach the Reset Button Pad, and snap together your calculator. Please note that the black "dot" on the Reset Button Pad should be facing the circuit board of your calculator when reassembling the calculator.

Step 10

Put back together your calculator in the opposite order that you took it apart. Once the calculator is back together, it should be working again!

Now your calculator is fixed!

Fixing a calculator can seem daunting at first, but it isn't as difficult as it looks. Hopefully this repair guide was able to help you out.
